January 2010

A few years ago Paul created armor outfits for a pair of pugs for an exhibit at the Cactus Gallery in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles. The show was called Dog is Love. Our son had recently made up a character named Skip the Flying Pug and was enthralled by all things puggy. Because of that we met a pug rescue lady. She was very enthusiastic, had 20+ pugs at home, and was a little crazy, as many dedicated people have to be. She loaned us 2 sweet dogs for the opening of the exhibit. It was so much fun seeing Paul arrive, with the dogs dressed to the nines. It was like the Oscars with all the camera flashes!

Blogger, Josh Carpenter discovered a picture from this event online somewhere and contacted us for an interview. He just posted it here.

Here’s a picture from that night, and another from a recent set of armor made for a beautiful husky in San Francisco for Halloween.

Jason Webley, folk/gypsy/punk musician, performance artist, and cool guy came through town last night to do a show at the Bobo Gallery and visit with us.

Despite the weather, the room filled up.  The show opened with Vaudevie aka Valerie  from Hellblinki Sextet. Loved her version of “You are my sunshine”. She plays accordion and assorted homemade devices. Then Jason came on with some  old and some new stuff, took us on a trip through the 80s (including “Billie Jean”), and finished up with a “The glass is full, drink up drink up” love fest. Much warmth on a snowy night.

He posed in one of our new tophats this morning. Accordians are the perfect accessory, don’t you think?

This winter seems to be the season of the photoshoot. We joined ModelMayhem in December at the suggestion of local Asheville photrographer Eloise Farr . It’s a professional network with many excellent models and photographers. We’ve connected with some lovely people since then and are doing various rentals and trades over the next few months. By March we should have several sets of new fabulous pics to share. One of the benefits for clothing designers is that the model and photographer that use your work will post it on their pages too, so all of their friends and connections get to see it. It expands our reach 100 fold.

Paul is creating a wild bra and belt for Winter Wolf Studios in Cincinnati,  based on the fantasy artist Boris Vallejo’s paintings (see above).

Another local photographer, Nick , is using several OA pieces for a shoot this weekend. He came to our refrigerated studio last week to see it in person. Very nice guy.

Model Kelly Eden, based in Denver, has a great look that will compliment the armor beautifully. We’re still figuring out what we’ll collaborate on, maybe an underwater scene!

We’ve also got a steampunk thing in the works and probably at least one more something, before the busy summer season hits.

Jakob Grimm was born today in 1785, making this his 225th birthday. I loved the Terry Gilliam 2005 film The Brothers Grimm. Filmed in Prague, it stars Matt Damon and Heath Ledger as the brothers Will and Jake Grimm.  The Mirror Queen had a brilliant golden headdress. Would be a great challenge to recreate it.

Guy Dyas was the film’s Production Designer. Here is one of his sketches.

A hat style during the renaissance had a similar shape. There is a weird painting in the National Gallery in London, popularly known as The Ugly Duchess, that shows it. Don’t know what the style is called.

The crazy month of December is finally over: the flu, visitors, travel to NY, holiday events, too many expectations. Whew.

Now looking ahead to cool, calm January. Hope you all have a fantastic (extravagantly fanciful; marvelous, outlandish) new year!

Here are a pair of my lovely sisters, Ursula and Kate. Kate is wearing her Christmas Organic Armor choker as a headband.
